•1866: production of dextrose from corn starch
•1882: development of corn sweeteners: refined corn sugar (anhydrous sugar)
•Corn based sweeteners could compete in some markets that had been the sole domain of the sugar industry.
•Obesity rate doubled
•1967: The first commercial shipment of high fructose 15% corn syrup (HFCS). Went up to 42% in 1968
•1970-1980: Further refinements developed. HFCS became the sweetener of choice for soft drink industry in the U.S.
